Introduction
My graduation project 'machine-made' consists of a 90 minutes documentary, an installation, an ever-growing collection of paintings and a website where all of these come together. Machine-made is a project researching the influence of technology on humans. Technology is such a big part of our lives, we can't live without technology. Humans need technology to survive, because humans are technological by nature. A trailer of the documentary can be seen below.
To be able to talk about technology, I need to use technology. Machinemade.xyz contains a six-part series about the influence of technology on humans. The videos are made with the use of countless gathered videos from the internet. The internet has given us access to a plethora of videos, images and information. But it has also shifted our views on authorship.
Technology has made it possible for me to make these videos. The music was generated with an artificially intelligent music generator called Jukedeck. And all the voice-overs where made using a text-to-speech generator that was made available by Microsoft. Every part of the series ends with a small experiment about the topic. All the videos I used are credited on machinemade.xyz.
As a part of the machine-made series I made an installation that shows how technology is able to lead its own life. Images have become very important to humans. For over 40.000 years we have made paintings and sculptures of nature. We need images to comprehend te world. We connect to the world through technology. Although we created
technology, it has the ability to lead its own life. The installation uses 10 years of eBay stock exchange data to paint images. We created the financial system but we don't fully control it anymore. The financial system is an example of technology that is able to lead its own life and behave autonomous. Just like nature.
Is it possible for technology to develop its own understanding of the world?
